LIVING WITH DENTURES: READ OUR FAQ

Much like natural teeth, dentures require care and maintenance to keep them in optimal condition. If you are new to dentures, you will have to learn some techniques to preserve them and ensure they fit properly. Read our FAQ on this page, and contact Westmount Denture Clinic for more information.

WHAT IS A DENTURIST?

A denturist is a trained professional who is qualified to fabricate, fit and repair dentures. In the Province of Alberta, the profession is government-regulated and overseen by the College of Alberta Denturists.

WHY DON’T MY DENTURES FIT AS WELL AS THEY USED TO?

Your jawbone may shrink over time, particularly if you have had teeth extracted. If this is the case, you will need to get your dentures relined to fit to your new jaw shape. Your dentures will typically only last 5 to 7 years, so it may be time for a new device.

MY DENTURES ARE BROKEN. CAN I REPAIR THEM MYSELF?

No. Never repair your own dentures, as this can make the problem worse and make it more difficult or even impossible for us to repair them in the future. If your dentures are broken, please see a professional as soon as possible.

WHEN I GET FITTED DENTURES, WILL I NEED TO GO WITHOUT TEETH?

No. We are proud to offer immediate dentures. We will measure your mouth and fabricate your dentures prior to extracting your teeth. Then, when your teeth are extracted, we can insert your immediate denture on the same day. Your jawbone will shrink in the months following extraction, so we can adjust your dentures as required.

WHAT ARE IMPLANT DENTURES AND WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES?

Implant dentures are anchored by metal roots that are inserted directly into your jawbone. This metal implant will hold your dentures in place, providing a comfortable and secure fit that looks and feels similar to natural teeth. Not only is this the most comfortable denture option, the metal roots will also help to preserve the size and strength of your jawbone.
